Card testing is a type of fraudulent activity where someone tries to determine if stolen card information can used to make purchases.

Stripe has an in-depth help article with suggestions on how to not only prevent card testing but also identify card testing through their Developers section of the dashboard. Learn more from Stripe here.

In our experience as nonprofit consultants we find nonprofits are often the victims of fraudulent credit card charges, where fraudsters attempt small ($1,$2....) donations to test credit card numbers that they have acquired. This can happen in single transactions or many transactions in a short time, can be inconvenient and data intensive to deal with and can be reputationally embarrassing.

Fraudulent activity such as card testing is an unavoidable part of online commerce but cloudStack has built, and is constantly improving features in fundraisingManager to be support nonprofits.

  1. Minimum Donation Amounts – fundraisingManager 2.0 (learn more about the new product here) allows you to configure a minimum donation amount on each donation form configuration. Appropriate minimum donation amounts may sufficiently “discourage” fraudsters, and compel them to move on to another target.

  2. donationManager Velocity Check – fundraisingManager 2.0 (learn more about the new product here) is introducing “donationManager Velocity Check”, a new feature that allows organizations to configure the maximum number of Stripe Charge attempts allowed within a specified time interval (i.e. 5 Charges in 30 seconds). This feature will be available to all fundraisingManager 2.0 customers by the end of February 2022.

  3. Stripe’s Radarhttps://stripe.com/en-ca/radar

    - Stripe Radar helps detect and block fraud for any type of business using machine learning that trains on data across millions of global companies.

    - radar data is anonymous and does not share donor data.

    - there is an additional cost through Stripe for this feature.
