General Allocation Units can be a great way to manage how your donor's gifts will be spent. GAUs can be allocated based on a planned campaign or for specific gifts. Take a look at some examples of how you can leverage GAU allocations.

Campaigns

One or more GAUs can be assigned to a specific campaign to allocate a gift to GAU(s)  when it's created.  There are two primary ways you can work with defining GAUs in a Campaign

  1.  a) You can define GAU(s) as a percentage of the gift. For example with your Unsolicited Campaign admin expenses - 97% goes to a Main Fund GAU, and 3% goes to a Administrative Expenses GAU.

E.g. someone donates $100 to the unsolicited campaign, with the split listed above two GAU allocations are created. $97 to the Main Fund GAU and $3 to the Administrative Expenses GAU.

  2. You can set a default GAU for all donations and on a specific campaign set a fixed GAU of $5 to goto administrative expenses. For example your default GAU is set to the main fund. Within your Year-end Campaign you define one GAU allocation of $5 for admin expenses.

e.g. someone donates $50  to you unsolicited campaign. Two GAU allocations are created: a $45 allocation to the Main Fund GAU  and a $5 allocation to the Administrative fund. However if a gift is less than the fixed GAU amount then only the default GAU will be created

To set the GAUs at a campaign level from the Campaign record click the down arrow on the GAUs related list and select "Manage Allocations"

Recurring Donations

For designating a unique allocation split to match a Recurring Donor's intent you can also define the allocation split against the Recurring Donation.  In this case after you've created the Recurring Donation within fundraisingManager you create define allocations within the Recurring Donation > GAU Allocation related list. Opportunities will be updated in real-time to  include the GAU allocations. Note: You should allocate based on percentages or the allocation will not match the donations.

Lastly you can also create GAU Allocations by default in NPSP Settings.  In NPSP Settings > Donations > GAU Allocations you can set Default Allocations Enabled to true. Then you must define a specific allocation. When any opportunity is created if the Campaign doesn’t specify a GAU allocation then an allocation will be created to the default GAU at 100% of the opportunity amount.
